Learning and Training

As a consultant with McKinsey you will be both learning and performing an active role at the same time, and always supported by a mixture of formal and team-based mentoring. Following some basic training, you will be assigned to client work and be expected to make an impact right away. You will find that your responsibilities and influence increases until you are managing or directing an entire project. Ultimately your personal development may lead to becoming a partner. Our philosophy is based on merit, not tenure, so you will advance when ready.

McKinsey's vast network of global offices also provides opportunities for international assignments, where you will have the opportunity to learn about other types of clients, cultures, and consultants.

Formal Training
Formal learning programs begin the moment you start and last throughout your career. All recruits complete our Basic Consulting Readiness (BCR) program during their first week. BCR is designed to introduce consultants to, and allow them to practice, key consulting skills before joining their first client study.

All business analysts attend a four-week 'business bridge' program covering microeconomics, finance, strategy, marketing, and accounting, taught by faculty from Oxford University and the Tuck Business School, a top U.S. business school.

Feedback
Everyone gets formal and informal feedback. We've found that ongoing, immediate feedback, delivered in an environment of trust and mutual support, provides the most valuable opportunities for all consultants at all levels to learn and grow. Your engagement manager, colleagues, office mates, fellow team members, and McKinsey partners will all provide you with constructive feedback. And you are expected to coach and counsel others in return.

Mentoring
Every consultant is assigned a McKinsey partner as a Development Group Leader (DGL), a professional mentor to provide advice and help shape career direction and professional growth. The DGL role is one of the most important support structures at McKinsey. Your DGL takes an active role in following your progress and is present as your advocate during reviews. Your DGL will also advise you on your development, helping you to make the choices that are right for you.
